      i 1890 gikk han [Jørgen Smith] sammen med den langt eldre Johan Jørgensen fra Tvedestrand og dannet trelastforretningen Smith & Jørgensen Ltd., med sagbruk på Sagholmen. Det ble ingen suksess. J. Jørgensen døde allerede i 1894 og Jørgen maktet ikke å drive virksomheten videre på egen hånd. Det manglet ikke på vilje og gode fortsetter, men i 1899-1900 måtte han gi opp.
